Christmas has been tough enough on them, and now it was New Year’s Eve and Jack, Ianto and Gwen really didn’t feel like celebrating. They felt they really didn’t have much to celebrate for. Their lives and their city had been turned upside down. Cardiff was slowly starting to rebuild but it was going to take time. Eventually Torchwood Three would rebuild but that would take an even longer time. They really couldn’t fathom replacing Tosh and Owen with new members.
Rhys knew that they were having a tough time with the holidays. They all put up a brave front saying they were fine, but every time their eyes gave it away. Just a hint of darkness and sadness behind their eyes. Something that showed that each was suffering in their own way. He needed them to forget they were in Torchwood for a couple hours. That they were regular humans with real emotions. So he came up with the idea to go down to the ice rink to ring in the new year. Now all he had to do was convince the rest of them.

Rhys decided to bring the rest of the team goodies on this New Year’s Eve as a way to get into the Hub and give them no choice but to leave. He entered the Tourist office and Ianto was up there to greet him.
“Cheers, mate!” Rhys said with a big grin, “I’ve come bearing sweets for you guys. Figured a little pick me up on New Year’s Eve was in order.”
“Thanks for the sweets, but we really don’t need pick me ups. We’re fine,” Ianto replied coolly.
“Bloody Hell. You are not fine. None of you have properly grieved and you all look worse for wear. Especially these past couple weeks. I knew the holidays were going to be tough for you guys but seriously. Get out of the HUB. It’s New Year’s Eve. You need to ring in the new year properly.” Rhys was practically yelling now, and that had brought Jack and Gwen up to the tourist office.
“Rhys, honey, what’s going on here?”
“Nothing love. I was just stating that you guys need to start off the new year right, and that is by not being in the Hub.”
“Ohh sweets,” Jack said. “Thanks Rhys.”
“See someone here appreciates them.” Rhys said with a ‘death glance’ directly at Ianto.
“So what were you thinking of Rhys?” Jack said with his mouth full of biscuits and crumbs spilling out of his mouth.
“I was thinking of going down to the Cardiff Ice Rink. Skating and fireworks, what could be more romantic?”
“Not going,” grumbled Ianto.
“What’s wrong,” both Jack and Gwen asked.
“Nothing.”
“Something’s wrong,” said Jack.
“I don’t want to talk about it.”
“Fine, we won’t talk here, but I’m not giving this up without a fight. I’m getting you talk while at the ice rink then.”
Ianto groaned and Gwen dragged Rhys downstairs to gather everyone’s stuff and to set the Rift Predictor to go off on Jack’s wrist strap if anything was to go wrong.

Twenty minutes later they arrived at the ice rink and there were already loads of people there skating around and riding the Carousel. Ianto was protesting that the carousel was for kids when Jack told Gwen and Rhys to go get some food to leave him alone with Ianto. They hurried off and Jack pulled Ianto to an empty bench and sat them down.
“What is wrong with you?”
“Nothing.”
“Bull shit. I know you are having a tough time grieving, thinking you have to be the strong one for the team. Please, Ianto if you keep doing this, it will destroy you.”
“No, it won’t. Honestly with what I’ve seen in my lifetime hasn’t destroyed me yet, this pales in comparison.”
“Will you please try to enjoy tonight. Rhys is concerned for all of us. That’s saying a lot of him. Trying to help us move on. He’s right you know. Tomorrow is a new year. It’s a new start.”
“New Year, new beginnings.”
“We deserve this,” Jack said, grabbing Ianto’s hands. “We deserve to be among society even if it’s just for a couple hours.”
“Fine.”
“Thank You, Ianto.” Jack leaned in and gave Ianto a chaste kiss on the lips. They both went off to find Gwen and Rhys and some food.

After a quick meal of fish and chips they rented their skates and made their way to the ice. As soon as they all got onto the ice they started to slip and slide around. Pretty soon they all ended up as one pile on the ice. They were all laughing and trying to get themselves up-righted so they could skate some more. The hours passed like nothing and after lots of laughs, falls, and surprisingly some skating. Jack was by far the best skater of the group but Rhys surprisingly stayed up the most after Jack. Gwen and Ianto on the other hand were practically on top of each other and one time almost took out a bunch of little kids. Running over kids with ice skates wasn’t on the agenda so Gwen and Ianto were perfectly happy to let their significant others continue on with the skating for a little while longer.
“Ianto, what’s wrong love?”
“Tosh and Owen should be here, having a laugh skating with us. Owen would be grumbling the whole time we’d be skating. I just miss them. A lot.”
“I know,” Gwen wrapped her arm around Ianto’s waist and they just half hugged each other. “I know, I miss them more now that it’s the holidays. Some days it’s easier, and some days it’s not. But I continue on. They’d want us to be happy. Or as happy as you can be working for Torchwood. Everyday I feel them with me.”
“I do too. I know Tosh is looking over me when I am doing some techy stuff now.”
Gwen just laughed, “See not so bad.”
“You’re right. Not so bad. It’s almost time for New beginnings.” They called out to Jack and Rhys and they came tumbling off the ice and they all stood around waiting for the clock to strike midnight and the new year to begin.
When the new year arrived Jack and Ianto kissed as did Gwen and Rhys. Then they had a group hug.
“See mates, wasn’t this a better way to ring in the new year?”
“Yep.” The guys said as they all just watched the fireworks display enjoying each others company.
